Film Noir




Film Noir, derived from the French term meaning ‘black film,’ is a style and approach to the production of many classic black and white Hollywood crime movies. While opinions differ on its definition, there are a foundation of elements that are common to film noir.

Elements of Film Noir
Dark - Lots of shadows and light coming through blinds
Suspense-filled
Thrilling mystery
Dutch camera angle – tilted camera angle portrays tension or uneasiness
Distorted image of characters, using mirrors or glass reflections
Voice over narration may be used
Crime, usually murder, is the movie’s central theme
Usually main character is a detective or policeman
They usually get double-crossed
“Femme fatale’ a dangerous woman who knows how to get what she wants
