Neo-Noir

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is a film that fits into the genre of a Thriller. However the film also qualifies as what is known as a neo-noir.

Neo = New
Noir = Black or Dark

The film is set in the late 1930s, which was the time of the noir, and includes film noir themes that could be a way for the directors way of adding realism to the movie.

How do you think noir elements help add realism to a movie?

The movie revolves around a detective plot. Another elements of noir in the film is the flashback at the beginning of the movie. The film has a definite femme fatal: Dr. Elsa Schneider. She seduces not only Indiana Jones, but also his father, Sean Connery. She is also the source of the noir theme of betrayal in the movie.
